A Review Of Sonic 4: Episode 1 And What It Has To Offer
The Sonic series was once the pinnacle of gaming, with the first titles topping the polls each time thanks to their vibrant, fun and accessable videogaming. The arrival of new-gen consoles and higher expectations resulted in Sega trying out new tricks with the tried and tested method; introducing 3-Dimensional environments, on-the-rail gaming and more. In recent years, the Sonic franchise has deviated even more so, with titles presening him as a knight, a werehog, and more. After years of lamenting this, followers of the classic will get their needs realised by the newest game in the franchise; Sonic 4: Episode 1.
While some of the current titles within the series have been excellent, Sonic 4: Episode 1 is claimed to be what players have been longing to be made for ages; by returning to the classic gameplay. In Sonic 4: Episode 1, Sonic brings back his side-scrolling escapades, with environments widely reminiscent of those viewed within the classic titles, like the Green Hill Zone. The excess characters are left at home too, even trusty sidekick Tails missing from the lineup. Said to be the follow-on to Sonic & Knuckles, the game has Sonic strike out on his own for new adventures.
Of course, our present generation consoles will provide Sonic 4: Episode 1 with beautiful graphics. In spite of being a side-scroller, the character models have been rendered in 3D, resulting in a very polished finish. The colours are more vibrant than before and the myriad terrain elements we fondly remember, together with the loops-the-loops, have been nicely realised. The release also supports high-definition, so has the potential to look even more stunning.
The game will be released on Wiiware, PSN and Xbox live and as the game’s title infers, further adventures are set to follow. Will these fun little offerings help bring Sonic back to the pinnacle? Only time will tell. But for many who enjoyed the look and feel of the classics, Sonic 4: Episode 1 will be a definate return to the method.
